This song is best heard with your eyes closed. The voice of Jonathan Meiburg may take a little while to get used to, but give it a chance because the track just gets better and better. I also enjoy "Red Sea, Black Sea" from the 2007, Palo Santo album.
Buy Leviathan, Bound
I first heard this song on the blog, gorillavs.bear and immediately loved it.
I would mildly compare her voice to Feist. I wasn't a big fan of "Pirates Gospel", but I decided to give it a listen anyway and I'm glad I did. Her sophomore album is supported by a backup band, contrasting the stripped down debut album. She'll be at SXSW if you're in the area.
Buy White As Diamonds
Released In October 2008, In Ear Park is the sophomore album for Fred Nicolaus and Daniel Rossen (Grizzly Bear). Layers of percussion combined with vocal harmonies and grimey guitar make this a winner. The harp was a nice touch also.
I'm driving an 80's white VW rabbit somewhere in the suburbs. It's overcast and chilly, but the tops down anyway. My scarf is flopping around in the wind and my aviators are having a hard time staying on my face. I pull up to her house and honk the horn. She slowly opens the door and you just get a glimpse of her black micro dress, red pumps and permed hair. The sidewalk magically becomes a runway and this song comes on as she makes her way towards me.
Handsome Furs is a side project for Wolf Parade's Dan Boeckner, who is joined by his fiancee Alexei Perry and Wolf Parade drummer Arlen Thompson. You'll notice that Hadsome Furs is more electronic and upbeat than Wolf Parade, and he doesn't have to share the microphone with Spencer Krug. Dan Boekner's voice is a mix between Beck and Ric Ocasek (The Cars). The guitar is infectious and pairs nicely with Dan's voice.
