Creeping "I don't know what the two sisters Hannah and Collette Thurow, hailing from London, England, have done in their lives up until now, but actually it's not all that important. For now, it's fine to know that they've very recently formed 2:54, a musical project apparently devoted to tunes with a haunting yet beautiful feel to it. The first track they've posted on their myspace, Creeping, is marked by the sisters' sweet voices singing over a crescendo guitar fuzz, with precise percussion and a very reduced bass line that's slightly reminiscent of fellow British The xx. A remarkable song, and that's all we need to know." PLAY MP3 |

I've Gotta Get "After playing record label musical chairs for the past year or so, corrugated garage-rock hellions Woven Bones have finally gotten hitched. The lucky party? Seattle's Hardly Art, a fine home for a band that sounds like The Cramps welding stuff with The Flinstones. "I've Gotta Get" is the a-side to their first HA 7-inch, and it makes us feel like we need a bath of hand sanitizer." via - RCRD LBL
ArtistRoster presents Woven Bones w/ Woodsman, Tennis on August 10 at Hi Dive. With such a great lineup, I'm sure I'll see you there.

Summer Girl "Though my love for F@#ked Up is seemingly undying, we’re not here to explore Cook’s exploits as the third guitar player in the best band of the last decade. We’re here to examine his mind-blowingly awesome garage punk side project: Young Governor. The project, which is relatively new (circa 2009), is taking a direction that is eerily reminiscent of Blood Visions-era Jay Reatard, and while that might sound negative I find it comforting, as I often feel like the only person who wishes more Blood Visions-eque stuff existed. Featuring all types of jangly guitar riffs, 50’s-era rock and roll beats, and an energy that is “too legit to quit”, Cook bangs out songs about love and girls and self-loathing and all those other introspective, confessionalist topics that I can’t seem to get enough of. Though Young Governor’s catalog is small (2 7″ EPs and 1 5-song 12″ EP) everything that’s been released has been pure gold."

Katy On A Mission "I’m intrigued by the recent juxtaposition of pop and dubstep; smooth vocals gliding over aggressive basslines and attractive synth work. Skream and Benga are two producers maintaining top40 status with this type of music. They collectively produced ‘I Need Air’ (thanks GDD for the heads up) and Benga is credited as producer for ‘Katy On A Mission’. Good stuff. I wonder if it will ever hit the mainstream in the states."

Future Tidings If I could be accused of anything, it certainly wouldn’t be for a lack of love for my city. With tracks like this consistently pouring out of Chicago, how can you blame me? Today I bring you Chicago-based electropunk trio Gemini Club, who have considerably stepped up their game with the premiere of this video for “Future Tidings”, almost a year to the day since the release of their EP of the same title.
The video, like the song, is a little sexy, a little sad and definitely from the future. More than anything, it’s a sign that Gemini Club are ready to be more than just another local band.

Guillotine "Her dark good looks steal your attention through the lens and clearly come from her Algerian heritage, but her love of warping out North African instruments and utilising a more percussive beat will be what gives her the required edge. Sadly, this tribal tinkering she talks of still needs to find the foreground, but her blend of common pop and all it’s structural strengths, with this authentic, atypical ingredient certainly has potential. With each new demo that appears she seems to ride along more confidently and subsequently creates more intricate and attractive performances. Like all of the truly special female pop artists, past or present, the comparisons with others off the lengthy production line is actually irrelevant, for we know they always break the mould when it comes to genuine talent."

Kentish Town (Walls remix) "On the heels of her acclaimed solo release, Love And Its Opposite, the end of August will find Tracey Thorn dropping Opposites, a digital-only EP of experimental remixes. Our first taste is the track Kentish Town, as re-imagined by WALLS, a collaboration of electronic music blogger Sam Willis and Banjo or Freakout’s Alessio Natalizia, whose own self-titled release created quite a little stir earlier this year."

Let's Get Out Of Here "Les Savy Fav’s new album Root For Ruin doesn’t officially drop until September 14th (via Frenchkiss), but the album already leaked this past weekend. The band seems to have a really good sense of humor, because they just opened a I “Stole” Root For Ruin page. It was opened to give the people, who downloaded the leak already, a possibility to pay a donation for the leaked version." Here’s what they say:

Love More "Since her critically acclaimed Pitchfork Festival opening performance – Sharon Van Etten‘s career is gaining nothing but momentum. This Jersey born / Brooklyn raised transplant kills her audience in the softest of ways. She sings about it all with the minimalist of effort."

Under The Bridges "In an alternate universe, ‘Under the Bridges’ is Sweden’s definitive entry to the Eurovision Song Contest, pissing a steady stream of golden musical urine over the competition as they sweep their way to the final without a single glance downward at the detritus. It’s carried for the most part by an incredible vocal from the titular Niki, not a million miles away from The Knife’s Karin Dreijer Andersson (vulnerable but as sharp as broken glass). Indeed, Erik Hassle, “Sweden’s answer to Robbie Williams”* claims they’re “like The Knife but better”."

Trap Of Mirrors “Almost six months ago we introduced you to Louisville, KY’s The Pass and their brand of indie pop hat marries Manner‘s synthesized fervor and Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix‘s endearing warmth. Over the last six months, The Pass has released an EP and worked on their full-length debut Burst with mixing engineer Alex Aldi, whose latest works include Suckers’ Wild Smile, Passion Pit’s Manners, Harlem Shakes’ Technicolor Health, and The Walkmen’s You & Me. Well, Burst is all wrapped up and almost ready for you to devour.”

Silver Screen "The boys from Beat Connection, a Seattle based duo, recently sent over their debut EP, Surf Noir. These eight tracks are light and summery with a heavy dose of nostalgia, and are perfectly reminiscent of the sand and surf. Considering that they’re giving away this delightful bundle of songs for FREE on their bandcamp, you’d really be a fool to pass this up."

Snowmelt Take a look at the video and photos from the Weed Diamond show last week at Hi Dive. I was really impressed by the amount of people in attendance for the opening band. With all of the positive press surrounding the band, I shouldn't have been surprised. Weed Diamond is on my "Bands To Watch" list. PLAY MP3 |
